The FAST experiment - Fast 1

The day of the Fast:

At 6pm on 13/12/2016 i ate my last meal... for 24 hours at least. It felt like a lifetime away though!

I stuck with a light chicken noodle soup because i didn't want to each something large that would expand my stomach too much. Personally i have noticed that large meals make me hungrier. I had no plans to work out during my first fast because i didn't know what my body would feel like without consuming food so i chose to be a little conservative here.

After work i wasn't too hungry and even though i would normally eat before bed i didn't feel too annoyed at having to skip a meal.

For breakfast the day after i would normally have nothing or just a slice of toast. Since i didn't eat the night before i felt a little hungry so i had a glass of water and after a few minutes i forgot that i hadn't eaten.

I was fairly busy at work and the day seemed to pass fast. Around 1pm i started to get the nagging feeling of hunger again but as before, a glass of water and a few minutes resolved this issue.

An hour of so after this i just could NOT stop thinking about food. I had already planned for this, in my bag hidden away i had stashed 2 small satsumas. (This was probably a bad idea)

I ate one slowly, making sure to savour each piece with a glass of water. I was fairly shocked to find i was no longer starving to death after this tiny piece of food.

During my lunch break at work i decided to go grocery shopping. 100% this is not something i would recommend. It was almost torture not to fill my basket with goodies and i barely escaped unscathed.

At 7pm i ate a small meal that i had prepped at home. I was a small veg curry (Around 300 cals) with around 50g of brown rice. I had planned on eating at around 6 but yay for me... i guess cheating with the satsuma made me feel like i should push myself a little.

After work i did go to the gym and i found i was crazy full of energy. I had been focused all day at work except for the hour leading up to the satsuma incident. Im sure i did almost ten times more work than i normally would have done.

I wasn't tired or drained during my heavy leg day workout. I would actually class this as one of the top 5 workouts of my entire life. It was that good! Afterwards i had my post workout whey shake and drove home for sleepy time.

The day after:

I felt pretty great this morning. I didn't eat before heading to work as i wasn't hungry.

No work today so my and a friend went to check out a new gym. I was still bounding with energy and had another awesome workout mainly focusing on heavy deadlifts and then working on our shoulders.

My thoughts:

  • It would seem that most of the time when i think im hungry, im simply thirsty. I have clearly forgotten how to listen to what my body actually wants.

  • Lack of food did not affect my energy and infact, on my next Fast day i will be adding on a volume gym session.

  • I dont eat enough fruit/veg.

  • The feeling of hunger does not increase over time and seems to come in waves which do pass.

  • Skipping food for the day made my focus intensely on other things such as work and gym.

  • Throughout the day i consumed around 4 pints of water.

Changes:

  • I will try to only have water during the 24 hour fast (no cheating next time!)

  • If i feel good and healthy i will push past the 24 hour mark.

  • I will also be adding in a workout during the fast. Nothing too intense though.
